Guess The Mystery Thing: "Burnt Toast" Floral Pendant.

Oh, yay!  It's time to play a new round of Guess The Mystery Thing!  (It's my guessing game giveaway, and everyone is  invited.)  Take a little look-see at my latest upcycled jewelry project, this big, lightly toasted flower:

I designed the flower to be both a pendant and a brooch.  You can pin it, or hang it on a necklace as shown here.  (BTW, the cool coppery necklace is a sneak peek of sorts - it's from Styled by Tori Spelling, a new line of jewelry-making components I've been trying out.  Gorgeous, eh?)

Your challenge: identify the mysterious secret ingredient in this upcycled flower.  What is the material used to make those charming charred petals?

First person to guess correctly wins a fabulous prize.  (Namely, this necklace.)

How it works: leave your guess in the comments.  There'll be two winners: first correct guess, and a random winner.  That's right, I said random winner - so even if you don't know (or think someone else already got it), enter anyway, you could still win.  And if your guess is funny, it might make my Most Creative Honor Roll.

This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere.  C'mon, join in!

THE ONE AND ONLY RULE

1. UNLESS YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS ONE CLICK AWAY IN AN ONLINE PROFILE, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WITH YOUR GUESS.  (Fun fact: if you only THINK your email is visible in your profile, it probably isn't.)

Ready?  Set!  Guess the Mystery Thing!

UPDATE: THIS CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED.  THANKS FOR PLAYING, EVERYBODY!  CHECK THE NEXT POST TO SEE THE REVEAL.

  1. Arrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!!!! Mkay. First. GORGEOUS necklace...Spectacular! Now for the amazing petals? I keep going back and forth thinking it can't be paper but that's what I keep coming back to. It looks like some sort of vintage ad or handbill. I. Got. Nuthin.

  2. I also think it is paper. It looks waxed...maybe a butter box? BTW I am loving the silver bunny.

  5. Book or newpaper pages singed on the edges? Or Aunt Maisie's oily potato chips she left to dry on her newspaper. Though I do see the word.."It'll" as in It'll be wonderful if I win this beautiful vintage flower chain necklace.

  7. Looks like batik fabric. That's what I'd use. I know silk works with a small flame, but I would have guessed that the batik (being cotton) would just burn up completely. Tell us, or "Great Crafty Guru", how did you make that lovely flower?
    Hugs!

  8. Random guess ... is it a to-go coffee cup?? If not, that gives me an idea for my own Tori Spelling inspired necklace!! Can't wait to find out ...

  14. Ad pages or bit notices that they give out along with the papers..could be the waxed paper that is used to cover up clothes and gifts

  15. I'm thinking it's the instructions for putting something together, maybe an umlaut-laden piece of furniture from Ikea.

  16. I'm probably wrong, but plastic bags fused together with the edges singed...?

Ironically, the e-mail before your blog post today was Jo-Ann Fabric's ad introducing the Tori Spelling line. I'm having a Tori kind of morning :-)

  23. It is a paradox from the teachers lounge, the backstory you ask? Here goes. Once upon a time in the land of unanswerable questions, last Wedsnday to be exact, the teachers decide to have a bonfire. See all the kids had been talking for weeks about the annual end of school bonfire to burn their school papers and the teachers wanted to see what all the fuss was about so they had their own camped out on the couch. But some of the questions were so treasured that they had to save them. They rolled the burnt paper up and brought them home, see one of them was a gardener and accidentally dropped the roll as they got out their keys to get in their house and then...

    1. It grew and grew into this beautiful flower but do you se that last petal? That's the paradox, it says, "If someone says they always lie, are they lying or telling the truth?"

  24. The petals look like dried, very thinly sliced zuchinni or cucumbers.Maybe even potatoes, apples or yellow squash but some sort of vegetable or fruit. The brownish edges would probably be from just the natural drying process.Possibly in a vegetable dehydrator. Then you sealed them to preserve them longer. Am I close? Please say yes coz this is so unique and adorable! I'd love to win it for my daughter! Do I get extra points for sharing? lol

  25. Coffee filters, totally! Is that anise in the middle? Then it would smell good, too! Lonecorndog@gmail.com

  26. Pages from a book? I can see text on the petals.

  27. OOOOH Michie, this is a tuff one considering all the miriad of possibilities then adding in the factor of your crafty-highness! I agree with some sort of printed paper.. with the beautiful shade of yellow and the blue-ish colored printing, I'm tempted to say butter stick wrappers singed on the edges. Who would want to take all the time to scrubbing the oily content off for that tho?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh dear, I'm late to the game. It's stunning for sure and those components are sure to be a huge hit. Hmm, I do see writing on the reverse and it looks like you played with matches to get the pretty petals to look so cool. It has to be made with a Dollar Tree bag.

  29. Fused plastic bags

Or you have recycled the papillon chair cushions from Barbie's patio after that unfortunate Memorial day BBQ incident

  30. Recently there was an alien space invasion where they dropped smoking hot odd shaped disks from their ships. These disks were sent to wipe out both our print material and our big girl panties. You happened to find some of the trash from this invasion where the printed material fused to the big girl panties and creative you made them into flowers. NASA will be contacting you soon

  34. So "some kind of paper" seems to be the general impression. But what is the source of said paper? I think it's an old book covering which you've fashioned into your fancy floral creation!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it is an old love note from an old boyfriend (see it is faded), so you tore it up, cut it into a flower and burned the edges. Great recycling!! It may not be your boyfriend, but someone else's.....
