The mystery solved. Winners! And mini-tutorial.

Hello again, me hearties!  My last post was a Mystery Thing challenge, featuring these fun, neon-bright little doodads:

And this time - whoohoo! - a bunch of you got it it right!  You people are growing extremely wily.  Clearly, I will have to work pretty hard in future to stay ahead of you.

The answer:

Yes, indeedy.  Zip-lock baggie zip-thingies.  I guess "zippies" is a pretty good name for them?

Winners winners winners!  For 1st correct guess, floresfamily8.  Well done, you clever thing!  Well done to the others who guessed it, too.

Winner of most creative guess was so difficult this time!  The ideas were amazing and the laughs were big.  Examples: chewing gum, My Little Pony circus train tracks, neon-sprayed belly button lint, and fruit roll-ups.  My favorite came from sa4grace, who guessed a NuvaRing.  (If you don't know, it's this.)  That just made me so happy, because it's exactly the kind of stunt I would pull!  But unfortunately she forgot to leave her e-mail.  So most creative goes to my next fave: Rachel B, who guessed flea collars!

And yippee, this week's random winners (two, because my mom read all the comments and wanted to give prizes to everybody!) are Brooke Anna and Whitney B.

A few commenters asked about the matching beads...I just lucked out with some strange plastic beads from my stash.

They do go perfectly, don't they?  But I experimented with all kinds of interesting pairings.  Pink dolomite marble, carved soapstone, antique silver...

So many things look sweet with zippies.  Who knew?  Okee doke, here comes the mini tutorial.

Rip the baggie away from the zippie by hand.  Then slide your scissors along the zippie edge to trim off the excess plastic.

Poke holes with a poky thing.  Find some nice beads or charms for dangling, and a chain or earring findings.  Then simply assemble with jump rings.

That's it!  They really do go together in a flash, you will love working with zippies.

For a different construction, use these little jewelry findings called ribbon ends.  Just squoosh 'em onto your zippies with pliers:

Easy and peasy.  Versatile and funny.  Amazing colors.  Make some of these jewels and be zippalicious today!

Congrats to all the winners; expect an e-mail from me anon.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love my readers???

  4. A NuvaRing?! ROTFL I was thinking that these would be a great recycled craft (for used zippy bags, washed up if necessary) - but probably not so much if that had been what you made them with.

In these photos, it's much easier to tell that they're a bit translucent. And I will have to make some. :)

  9. I don't know what I find more impressive: To see this things and to make cool jewelery out of it... or to see the created things and to guess what they are made of. I would never have though of zipper bag! ^^

  15. I just discovered your blog. W.O.W.

I'm becoming more and more interested in jewelry making but am too /s/cheap/s/ frugal to buy the fixings. I printed out about half of your posts to study and learn from your wacky inventiveness.

    Thank you for blogging!!!!
