Brainstorming A Banner

Hello, friends of repurposed and upcycled crafts!  I thought it would be fun take you along on a brainstorming session.  I was lucky enough to score this wonderful item:

It's an old street banner, advertising a 2009 exhibition from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA to its friends).  It was the very last one on a sale table outside the museum gift shop.  Here's the other side:

It's 3 feet wide by 8 feet long.  Made of thick, weatherproof plasticized canvas.  Way cool, right?

So what shall I do with it?  I could use it as-is, hung as a banner on the wall.  But, being me, I feel the  urge to cut it apart, rejigger, make something else.

A few preliminary thoughts:

Upholster an outdoor bench.
Cover a table to create a washable surface.
Cut it into thirds, frame them as a triptych.
Make cylinders to cover big glass vases.
Cut into strips for cuff bracelets and belts.
Cut out the decorative arch shape to frame a doorway.
Cut some squares to fold oversized Origami.
Put it under glass on a dining table or coffee table.
Make giant weatherproof flowers.
Turn it into a folding screen.
Fasten it around a hamper with grommets and zip ties.
Use it as an unusual backsplash in a laundry room.

That's what I have so far.  And my brain is still storming!  I might come back and add more thoughts as they occur.

Feel free to chime in!  Ideas, anyone?

  1. I like the idea of using it under glass, but since you live in a (ground) house you can use it outdoors. make a little marquee or awing and put a chair or bench underneath it where you can sit and sip a little wine or tea or use it as a awning for your front door - giving the feeling of a quaint little shop

  2. Definitely jewelry: pendants, bracelet tiles, even components for big earrings. Yum!

  3. Hello Michelle! I hope that your Mother's Day was nice. We are still mommies even if we just have furbabies. Um. I would use this on a long side table to serve friends so nice furniture/cloth doesn't get stained. Also, just hanging it up on a wall would be cool. Waterproof pillows/seat cushions for outdoor furniture. Not sure if it is sturdy enough but maybe a hammock?

  4. Cut it into thirds, frame them as a triptych. I think this is the coolest idea. It would be a good way to cover a large empty space.

  5. I think you covered just about all of it. How about place mats?

  6. It's such a great piece as is so my vote would be backsplash in the laundry room. I guess the question is could you bring your self to cutting it up? I wouldn't have the guts.

  7. so pretty! you have shared some unique ideas about it.. here are mine now ;
    if you can cut it,
cut the animals/birds motifs & decorate a wall with these.
you can also cut the dark red part with this shape & fix on a wall with shelf..
or it can also be looking well as a bed headboard..

  8. Hi,
I'm with Jessica Okui, Don't think I could bring myself to cut it up. Love the idea of upholstering a headboard. Or maybe using as part of a standing screen to be used in the garden or on the patio to define a little reading nook.
