Wear your trash receptacle.

Hi!  So!  Yesterday I made this headband:

I like how it grips my unruly hair and stays in place, thanks to the diamond shapes.

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, here's what it used to be:

Dollar store trash baskets!  I liked the colors together on the shelf, so I thought I'd spend two bucks and see what I could do.

With a pair of scissors, I snipped out some strips of connected diamonds...

I stacked a blue segment onto a green one with the diamonds offset, which created a cool argyle pattern.  A length of satiny cord, some basket-weaving 101, and voila!  The cord ties in back, and suddenly I was wearing my trash receptacle.  On my head.

Here's another one, with ribbon instead of cord.

Fun, aren't they?

But you know me, I am mostly about jewelry, so naturally I could not rest until I'd made a few pieces...

Of course, you won't have access to these exact baskets (unless you visit my favorite 99 cent store on Wilshire and Fairfax).  But check your local thrift stores and dollar emporiums for anything plastic with a diamond weave...

And you, too, may find yourself wearing a trash receptacle.

Bonus: two cute plastic bowls, lace-edged and useful as all get out.

Yep.  I think I got my two bucks' worth, don't you?

  17. I LOVE THE TWO WASTEBASKETS YOU BOUGHT AND MADE INTO SO MANY THINGS! VERY CLEVER, INDEED. LIKE YOU, I AM ALSO PICKING THINGS UP AT THE 'EURO' SHOPS HERE, KNOWING THAT ONE DAY I WILL THINK OF SOMETHING TO DO WITH THEM. I RECENTLY BOUGHT SEVERAL OF THOSE WOODEN EXPANDABLE COAT RAKES WHEN REALIZED THAT TAKIng THEM APART AND USING THE PEGS WAS MUCH CHEAPER THAN GOING TO A HARDWARE SHOP AND BUYING THE PEGS THEMSELVES! ONE EURO SPENT AT THE EURO SHOP GAVE ME TEN PEGS FOR ONE EURO! YEAH, I AM A CHEAP SKATE! THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING ALL YOUR CLEVER IDEAS WITH US - I WILL CERTAINLY BE LOOKING AT PLASTIC WASTE BINS IN A NEW LIGHT! Lis
