Guess the Mystery Thing: Art Nouveau Earrings.

Hiya, everybody!  Let's play a round of Guess The Mystery Thing!  If you can identify the mysterious secret ingredient in these upcycled earrings, you could win a pair.  Check them out:

The mystery this time: those pretty swoopy birds.  Don't they have a cool, Art Nouveau silhouette, hung upside-down like that?  What were they in a former life, and where'd I get them?  Be specific.

How it works: leave your guess in the comments.  There will be two winners: first correct guess, and a random winner.  That's right, I said random winner - so even if you don't know (or think someone else already got it), enter anyway, you could still win.  And if your guess is funny, it might make my Most Creative Honor Roll.

This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere.  C'mon and join in!  There is only one rule.

THE ONE AND ONLY RULE

1. UNLESS YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS ONE CLICK AWAY IN AN ONLINE PROFILE, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WITH YOUR GUESS.  (Fun fact: if you only THINK your email is visible in your profile, it probably isn't.  Go in and make sure, okay?  Nothing's sadder than a winner disqualified for no contact info.)

Ready?  Let's do it, people.  Guess the Mystery Thing!

UPDATE: THIS CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED.  THANKS FOR PLAYING, EVERYBODY!  REVEAL IN THE NEXT POST!

  1. Hi you guys, Mich here. I'm going to leave a message in the comments, because guesses without emails are still a problem for lots of people who are entering. If your name is Amy and you keep leaving awesome funny guesses, and last time left a comment wondering why you are never a random winner - well, you were! But no email, waaah! I hope you (and all the others who keep missing out) read this...fingers crossed.

That is all. Let the games continue!

  2. Hmmm, my best guess is some kind of cake decoration. Or perhaps you stole the flamingos Alice and the Queen were using to play croquet.

  4. I think in a former life they were cocktail stirrers, but I have no idea where from. Happy Turkey Day!

  5. Oh goodness. Another I'll never guess. Hmmm....I'm torn between cocktail forks from some fancy schmancy restaurant and plant markers from the garden section of the home improvement store. I really have no idea. :)

In any case, they are lovely.

  10. I had to turn my computer upside down before I could guess - but I think they are gold plated fancy minature chopsticks! Probably from Ming Dynasty in the 14th century!

  12. Cocktail sticks ! Not the first one that one..darn. They could be lawn decorations for Florida Barbie's dollhouse...or could be two witnesses needed at Barbie and Ken's rushed wedding at city hall in Boca.

  15. they remind me of the cute little ice cream spoons I used to get with my treat back in the day in Slovenia (actually, even earlier, when it was still a part of Yugoslavia!) They had animal- shapes, but they didn't come in metallic colours... hm... There was a whole box of them in the freezer, and you could pick whichever one you liked. I wonder if they are still being made. Oh great, now I want ice cream.

  16. forks or drink stirers? They could also be doll house/park decorations

  17. They look like the mini lawn flamingos that come in a gift set with the "The Pink Flamingos Book", painted gold.

  18. They are the ends from the sticks the public health nurse uses to check kids scalps for nits.
They make them decorate to distract the kids from the fact they may have little 6 legged critters crawling across their scalps...

  19. I concurr with the coctail sticks/drink stirrers idea. It's easy to paint them gold. :)

  20. I think they are hiding from the rest of the pink flamingos who get stuck in peoples yard for the day! So, they are in hiding, by painting themselves gold, and hanging upside down! And doing a great job.

  21. Wow those are cool! I don't really partake of the alcoholic beverages so I can't confirm the fancy swizzle stick theory... Whatever they are, they make the gorgeous-est danglies! LUV! Or should I say LURVE....

  22. Judging from the segmented legs, I'm betting they're the lure of some arachnoid beastie. You're admiring the pretty golden birdies, waggling nicely in front of you, and then chomp - you're dinner.

    P.S. I have a craft blog now! :D http://www.tutsweet.com

  23. Really, how could you do this? Now you showed the whole world the secret of their long legs!

Nobody loves it if its beauty secret is revealed!

This is also true for Flamingos! (which are normally birds with wobbly, tiny legs, wouldn't it be for their secret hanging up side down procedure)

  24. Those are pink flamingo swizzle sticks. I have a pack of 'em.

  25. flamingo chopsticks!

  26. Possibly swizzle sticks, possibly straw toppers, definitely from the Dollar Tree (or your local $1 shop).

If I'm wrong with those guesses, then definitely the pet flamingo of a voodoo doctor. He ran away one too many times, and the voodoo doc shrunk him along with the latest batch of shrunken heads. So sad for the flamingo, but on the plus side, feeding him is a lot less expensive. And something about the shrinking process made him gold, which was really a nice, unexpected side effect.

  28. Amazing what you can find googling pink flamingo swizzle sticks! A whole new world of blogs, flamingo themed parties, bird/animal jewelry, flicker photos. I feel like I'm in Florida rather in the cold northeast. It's what I love about Mich in LA. You upcycle a product I have never heard of and a new world of fun opens up.

  29. My guess is that these, in their former lives, were flamingos in some froo-froo drinks, like the ones with umbrellas in them. You knew you could do something special with them and you did. You elevated their pink color with your Midas touch, making them what they are today.
